What is Jiriki Seitai?
Jiriki Seitai is a Japanese movement therapy—a form of self-treatment bodywork that was developed by Yu Yagami, a Japanese acupuncturist, Seitai practitioner, yoga instructor, researcher, and published author.
Jiriki means 'self-power' and Seitai is a traditional Japanese folk therapy similar to ‘Chiropractic + Shiatsu Massage,’ bringing the body into alignment. Yu modified his treatment techniques he was using on his patients so that they could apply the techniques on themselves at home without the therapist’s help. |

Why developed Jiriki Seitai? |
Yu Yagami was inspired to develop Jiriki Seitai because he wanted to accomplish three things:
1. To reduce financial burdens on the patients as well as government expenditure on social security. If people were to apply Jiriki at home and receive the same benefits, as from the therapists, they would save a lot of money. 2. To prevent recurring conditions. In order to have a lasting result, muscles need to be trained and the entire skeletal system needs to be adjusted, not just treating the symptomatic areas. Jiriki is unique and is known for its effectiveness in that it is both a treatment and body-conditioning. 3. For self-confidence. So many people are dependent on doctors and therapists only. If people can treat their own disorders and pain, there is more self-confidence. They would pay more attention to their lifestyle and well-being. |
Jiriki Band
Jiriki Band is offered to students during practice and used to facilitate meditation pose (giving a support on your back) and many Jiriki movements taught in the class. With Jiriki band, you can continue to practice Jiriki at home so the students usually make their own or buy one.
How to make a Jiriki band:
The material is 100% soft cotton, thin like a gauze material. The size is about 13 inch (28-34cm) width by 67-77 inch length (165-195cm) depending on the size of your body, both ends sewed together made into a loop.
*I am 156 cm tall and use a 168cm circumference loop.

How to know the right size for your body type?
Do the following pose: ①Cross-legged sitting pose You want to feel the band supporting your back and |
② Lie down on the floor with face up, knees together moved from side to side. You want to feel the squeezing around your waist line. (See picture ②). If not, it's too long. If it's too short, you cannot move your knees.

Partner Jiriki
Partner Jiriki is Jiriki Seitai adjustment technique that is taught by Jiriki Seitai practitioners to individuals or couples who want to learn treatment methods to apply to one another who have pain and chronic disorders due to the misalignment of their body.
It could be used as a home remedy between husband and wife, parent and child, caretaker and the disabled or elderly. You will be greatly appreciated by your partner and family members for initiating the relief that they needed. Partner Jiriki is a great way to connect with one another, foster a sense of gratitude between the two and develop a harmonious relationship. |
Is it safe?
The two people work as a unit in which the receiver of the treatment takes charge, giving the practitioner clues (guidance) like “More!” or “Stop!” while the practitioner slowly and gently applies the techniques. If the stimulation is felt too strong or too weak, the receiver will have enough time to send out cues so the practitioner can adjust the strength. The more they practice on each other, the better they will be at sensing about each other’s body, without clues.
Session:
For Partner Jiriki, one or two 60 min lesson(s) is all that is needed to learn the skills. The actual practice takes about 15-30 mins. This is a private session provided to one person, two or a group.

Depth of Jiriki Seitai
Since 1999, Yu has taught Jiriki Seitai classes and workshops throughout Japan and has published over 25 books and DVDs covering pain relief, vision recovery, weight management, and dementia prevention. Today, there are about 500 Jiriki trainers and 20,000 people attend Jiriki classes regularly.
To maximize the benefit of Jiriki Seitai, the students are encouraged but not required to practice it with a set of disciplines:
Jiriki Seitai is continuously evolving and updates are offered to the students and the trainers through a bi-monthly newsletter and workshops throughout Japan. |
Marie Yagami who is the daughter of Yu Yagami, has undertook the new responsibility of expanding the training to international students as well as Jiriki trainers in English in recent years.
